How to Choose the Right Rug

It is hard to imagine a finished living room without a rug. Rugs and carpets are great for binding different decor elements together and creating a finishing touch every space needs. Choosing a rug, however, is not an easy task: a wrong choice can imbalance your interior and become a distraction from the rest of your decor. In this article, we will share some tips on how to choose a rug the smart way.

1. Start from size and shape

Rugs are at their most functional when they are large enough to cover the area under all of your furniture. If you want a living room rug, don’t pick a rug that will only be a mat for your coffee table — it will easily disappear in the sea of furniture and other decor. As a rule of thumb, choose the shape that matches your furniture placing: don’t choose a round rug if your furniture placing resembles a rectangle.

2. Be mindful of your surroundings

Take a look at what will surround your future rug: is it a pastel ensemble that needs a color pop or is it a collection of different and bright decor elements you need to tone down? If your situation closer to the first option, you may consider an oriental-style rug or a floral pattern to add personality to your room. If there are plenty of eye-catching knick-knacks in your room, a geometrically-patterned rug can add cohesion and sophistication to your space.

3. Don’t forget about texture

There are a lot of materials rugs can be made of and your choice of the material should largely depend on your expected use of the rug. If you expect little traffic in your living room area, you may consider cotton, viscose, or wool (the latter is also heat-resistant, so consider this material if you have a fireplace). In other cases, consider hardwearing fibers, such as sisal or jute.
